Random Walks

These pieces are based on the mathematical concept of a “drunkard’s walk”, a random pathway that, on the aggregate, moves out from the starting point at a rate equal to the size of the step times the square root of the number of steps. For myself, it is the automatic nature of the random process that is fascinating.

These have been drawn on paper, with tape on the floor, with a rope in a field, with marker, with chalk, with a GPS through the landscape, and with a burin on Plexiglas. There are some videos of the locational walks in the Performance portfolio. You may view a sketchbook filled with ransom walk drawings in this PDF.
